Here’s a few affiliate Internet marketing tips that can help you earn extra money for little effort on your part. Do you currently have a web site that sells products? If you do, developing an affiliate program may be the opportunity you are looking for. An affiliate program is a way to obtain an increased sales level while gaining new customers and increasing awareness of your site. To get started, examine an affiliate Internet marketing tip and see if it’s right for you.

The first affiliate Internet marketing tip is determine if starting your own program is right for you. A successful program requires both time and money. You must be willing to work with those that will be your affiliates to help them promote your products. Your affiliates should be treated as business partners in the sense that they are working both for you and with you.

Another affiliate Internet marketing tip is to be careful the percentage you wish to offer and examine how you will pay your affiliates. Most affiliates earn 8% to 15% off the sales price of all the items bought by people brought to your site by theirs. If your profit margins are not high enough that it easily absorb the added expense affiliation brings, you may wish to reconsider your percentages. Most affiliates are paid per click, per lead, or per sale. Determine which is right for your business before offering affiliate programs.

An affiliate Internet marketing tip that deserves to be mentioned is to make sure your affiliates are promoting your sales as they are supposed to be doing. It’s just like an employee or business partner that is not holding up their responsibly. You may wish to have a minimum sales requirement quarterly or yearly to keep the affiliate relationship alive. If you keep in mind an affiliate Internet marketing tip or two in your brain while you are structuring your program, surely you will fund success.

Affiliate programs are a very easy and effective way to make money on the Internet right? so how do they work?

Essentially, affiliate programs are a way that you can promote other people’s products and get paid a commission for promoting them. You can get paid to promote almost any type of product and service on the web.

Most of the top companies on the web have Affiliate Programs. Dell computers, Amazon, Expedia, AT&T, Chase bank, Delta airlines and Walmart are just a few examples - did you know that you can be paid a commission to sell products online for any one of these companies?

The best thing about affiliate programs is that it is so easy to set up a relationship with any one of these companies. Normally in business you would have to spend weeks or months of meetings, proving that you are a worthwhile partner to be able to do business with these sorts of companies. However, an affiliate program allows you to get commissions straight away as a little guy, without all the hassle of meetings and forming that relationship.

There are thousands of affiliate programs that you can promote on the web. You have so many choices that you could pursue. The key factors for success with affiliate programs are the following:

Choosing the right affiliate programs. If you choose certain affiliate programs you will likely only be able to earn a small income because their payouts are small. Other affiliate programs have very large payouts and high earning per click (EPC). If you don’t know what earning per click (EPC) is, it is the average amount that affiliates earn from each click to the site that they are sending money to. Some networks express it in earnings per one hundred clicks.

For example you could say an EPC of $57. This means you make $57 on average for every 100 visitors that you send to a site or 57 cents for sending one visitor to the site. Generally I am looking for affiliate programs with an EPC of $20 or more, which means I am making 20 cents per visitor. Usually, I focus on programs that have an EPC of $100 or $1 per visitor. When you are earning $1 per visitor you have potential for a lot more profit.

The second critical factor is getting the traffic to the affiliate program. We are going to talk about this more in other issues of the Ecourse.

The third factor is being able to pre-sell to the visitors of your site. Let’s say that you have a website where you discuss different products and services, a comparison type of site. You can recommend the product that you think is most beneficial and then when people click through to the site after your recommendation, they are much more likely to buy.

How do you find good affiliate programs?

One easy way is to go to all of the affiliate networks and sign up for affiliate programs there. The major affiliate networks like Commission Junction have thousands of affiliate programs that you can join in all sorts of categories. You can find a listing of the different affiliate networks at: http://www.profitpuppy.com/affiliate-networks.htm

It also depends on what type of strategy you are pursuing with affiliate

programs. There are many different strategies and we can’t go into all of them now, we’ll talk about them in detail in some later issues of the ecourse. However here are a few strategies to get your brain ticking over with ideas:

You can promote affiliate programs directly using Google Adwords. You simply promote the program by creating your own ads. This is the quickest way to make money on the Internet as you can get started and in 1-2 hours have some ads up that are making you money. However, it is getting more and more difficult to make money with this strategy as there are too many people doing it. As with anything in life, if something is too easy to make money, everyone will start doing it and it then becomes more difficult because there is more competition.

One strategy is to focus on a particular niche area … let’s say you decide to do a site on car rentals. You could then join all the affiliate programs to do with car rentals. You can find many of them through the major networks, but you might also need to search on Google for something like – ‘car rental affiliate program’.

Another strategy is to build lots of little mini sites on the Internet focusing on different keyword phrases that people are searching for and get free search engine listings in Google and other search engines. This is a great strategy because the traffic that you get is free. This is general called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is great and can make you a lot of money but it is also very tricky. It is not easy to get to the top of the search engines. It requires a lot of knowledge, and quite a bit of effort. Don’t think that you can just read a book and do it … normally it is going to take months of dedication to get there.

That’s a few ideas, but whatever area you are involved in on the Internet you should definitely be promoting affiliate programs. Even if you sell your own product online you should still look into affiliate programs as a back end profit centre for your business.

Affiliate programs are one of the quickest ways to make money on the Internet. Over the next few issues of the Ecourse we are going to talk about other strategies of using affiliate programs.

Affiliate marketing is an extremely tricky subject and so is website advertising.

The reason is simple. Most of those who have mastered these subjects are keeping their mouths tightly shut. Some are releasing their valuable affiliate marketing secrets it in bits and pieces to try and make some quick cash before the methods become completely obsolete. The rest are busy trying to guess the secrets behind the successful affiliate marketing that easily brings in five figure incomes on a monthly basis for scores of people all over the world.

Today is your lucky day because you are about to move a step closer to successful affiliate marketing for whatever affiliate program you are involved with. You are about to read a previously closely guarded secret of affiliate marketing.

I clearly remember the day I discovered this secret rather casually from an article I read online just like you are doing currently. Later I went on to discover other key elements that were critical for the success of the whole program. I have packed all those secrets in this single series of two articles.

Here is the main secret that will multiply the effectiveness of your articles and ultimately your affiliate marketing.

It is possible to multiply the effectiveness of your articles in promoting your affiliate program by making a single step. And that is creating a blog and posting all your articles there.

Do not worry about getting traffic to your blog, it is the easiest thing to do and I will deal with that in part II of this article available at my blog http://big-online-story.blogspot.com

There are 4 very important advantages you will gain by starting a blog and posting your articles there.

1) Blogs always boost search engine visibility tremendously thus making all your articles much more visible and easier to find and therefore much more effective.

Whatever your opinion about them, blogs are rapidly changing the internet. Their popularity is rising by the day and most important search engines love them. Not surprising when you consider that they are constantly being updated even if not by the owner of the blog, by his visitors. Blogs have literally swept web sites aside. Smart online marketers and many involved in affiliate marketing are using them very effectively for website advertising to drive traffic to their websites.

2) You will be able to track and monitor which articles are the most effective in promoting your affiliate program.

Any advertising campaign that is able to measure results, dramatically multiplies its effectiveness. This is simply because you are able to tell which articles posted at which websites are most effective in your affiliate marketing.

Usually your affiliate marketing web site will not tell you exactly where your traffic is coming from. Armed with this information from your blog, you will be able to concentrate your efforts on the web sites where your articles are bringing in the most traffic and you will also focus on the types of articles that are bringing in the best results.

3) You can earn extra income from your articles by carrying google adsense ads at your articles blog.

Many people are convinced that carrying google adsense advertisements at your blog is better than any affiliate program on the net. Better in terms of the earning potential.

My opinion? It is easier to start earning cash much quicker with google ads than any other affiliate program I know of on the net. You see with affiliate marketing where you are looking to earn serious money, you will need to be patient. With google, you simply get the traffic and you start earning almost immediately.

You will need to apply to google adsense who will check out your blog and make a decision whether or not to accept your blog. The decision usually takes about 48 hours. Put some reasonable amount of content on your blog before you apply with google.

What I love about carrying google ads in my blogs is that I am busy building traffic to my affiliate marketing programs and at the same time I am getting paid for my affiliate marketing efforts. I love the net.

4) Having a blog will give you an extra marketing tool that can be very effective.

As mentioned earlier blogs are very popular. Which makes them very effective affiliate marketing tools. You will have heard of RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds which get content right on the desktop of your subscribers’ computers bypassing the troublesome ISP email filters.

Currently I do not know of a more effective online marketing tool other than blogs.

It really is very simple just launch your blog, post your articles and learn as you go along, how to maximize on blogs as marketing tools that will bring a huge difference to your affiliate marketing.

Affiliate Program is a ground floor opportunity. All you have to do is send visitors to your affiliate web site by placing a textlink or banner on your website and receive a commission on each sale, without the complication and expense of selling anything yourself.

Instead, you earn a commission for producing a transaction. Affiliate programs, also known as Referral Programs, Associate Programs, Profit Sharing Programs or Reseller programs, give affiliates the ability to create an online business selling thousands products and services.

One of the first affiliate programs was run by the mega- bookstore, Amazon.com. They still have the largest base of affiliates on the net although they may not be the best affiliate program for many! with over 600,000 web sites being affiliated.

Affiliate programs are generally offered by sites selling goods or services, although some affiliate programs reward other types of transaction such as getting a visitor to sign up for a free newsletter, or a download.

Some affiliate programs pay per lead rather than per sale, in other words, you bring them a prospective customer and they pay a fixed "finder’s fee" for the chance to market to that customer.

This is a typical arrangement for affiliate programs in the insurance, real estate and credit card industries, for example:

Types of Affiliate Programs

Pay per sale: If you refer a visitor to the online merchant’s site and if visitor makes a purchase you get a percentage of the sale as commission.

Pay per lead: You get paid a one-time fee for generating a lead for the merchant. Usually you get paid $2-$5 if the visitor you referred fills out an application.

Pay per click: You get paid for every visitor you send to the online merchant regardless of any sale or purchase. Usually companies pay $0.05 - $0.15 per click.

Two-Tier: You get commission on direct sales you generate and also you get commission on sales generated by affiliates you recruited. Usually companies pay 25% commission for direct sales and 5% for sales generated by your affiliates.

Bounty: You get a one-time finder’s fee payment for the visitor you referred. You will not get commission on any future purchases that customer makes.

The Benefit of an Affiliate Program

Is that you just need to drive traffic to your affiliate site. Write a few articles and provide a few links.

You don’t need to find or deal with brokers, wholesalers, inventory, process orders, shipping & handling, customer service, tech support, handle returns, warranties, employees, etc-

An affiliate doesn’t even have to be present, your site will keep earning money while you’re sick, on vacation, or just doing something else.

Another advantage of being an affiliate, is that you do it from almost anywhere in the world..

How The System Works?

When you join an affiliate program, you will be given a specially formatted URL (Links) that you should use to link to the affiliate provider’s site.

This will enable the affiliate provider to monitor traffic to your site and pay according to the type of affiliate program.

Many affiliate programs pay a commission based on a percentage of the revenue generated by purchases made by visitors coming from your website.

For example; if you’re participating in an affiliate program that offers a 25% commission and you

send a visitor who purchases US$100 worth of products, you’ve just earned US$25 in commissions.

The commission rate itself can vary from 20% up- to 50%+ in the case of intangible products such as eBooks or website subscriptions.

Affiliate programs vary widely in terms of overall quality, reliability, commission, statistics, the amount of help that the merchant site offers in marketing the products or services it sells, and so on.

By thoroughly understanding an affiliate program, you’ll minimize the risk of not getting paid - and maximize your potential earnings.

Basic Idea

Affiliate marketing is a type of marketing in which revenue sharing between online merchants and online salespeople (affiliates), whereby compensation is based on performance measures, typically in the form of sales (Pay Per Sale), clicks (Pay Per Click) and impressions (Pay Per Impressions).

Merchants run affiliate programs to generate leads and sales from other Web sites. They pay an affiliate to generate sales from a button, banner, or link placed on affiliate’s website, newsletter, e-mail or pay per click ad. For example, if a site owner signs up for any merchant’s affiliate program, he will receive banners or links from this merchant that he can place anywhere on his site. Then, if a visitor clicks on this banner or a link on his site and buys something, he will receive a commission.

The introduction of affiliate programs in the late 1990s brought Internet marketing to a new level. The first companies that offered these programs saw sales increase dramatically. These companies basically get free advertising and only pay their affiliates a percentage of the sales they generate. It’s a win-win situation for the company that runs the affiliate program.

Now there are thousands of companies in hundreds of industries that will pay commissions to you for sales, leads or impressions.

How does it work?

1. First of all you are looking for products and services sold online and used an affiliate program.

2. Then you should sign up for free as a reseller (affiliate). How to become an affiliate you can find below.

3. After that you should advertise these products and services. How to promote them you can find below.

4. After all you’ll receive commission checks.

How to become an affiliate?

There are two ways to become an affiliate:

1. Some merchants have their own affiliate programs. You can join them on their sites.

2. But the most typical is to use Affiliate Program Providers (APPs). There are several large APPs. They connect a lot of merchants and affiliates in different industries. APPs collect payments from merchants and consolidate affiliate reporting and payments. For example, the affiliate places links to the merchant on their website, email, newsletter, or Pay per Click ads. When a potential customer clicks through the link they are sent to a specified page of the merchant’s site. If this potential customer buys something, fills out a form, or completes any action desired by the merchant the affiliate is gotten a commission. The APP tracks all elements of the transaction. Joining an APP is absolutely free. You should only fill out a form. The affiliate should usually wait a few days for approval, sometimes applying is automatic. You can find the Top APPs at www.RichTrack.com.

Advantages

Affiliate Programs are the ideal way to get money quickly and easily online:

You don’t need to launch a new product;
You don’t need to handle any products; v You don’t need physical inventory;
You don’t need a huge investment. You can start with $10 and 2 hours a week;
You don’t need a website because you can use Pay per Click ads.

Disadvantages

The very important disadvantage is a low click-through to conversion rate. Only a few percent of your visitors will click on a banner or link; of that percentage, a few percent will actually buy something. It can be disheartening to see that there have been thousands of visits to your site, and only small percent of them have bought something you promote. Recommendation: If you focus on the affiliate programs to the theme of your site and the interests of your audience then the better the results you will achieve. Also text links, "odd" ads (i.e. advertising that doesn’t immediately look like advertising) will generally give rise to much better results than banners or buttons.

You should be reliant on a merchant’s ability to sell to the visitors the products that you’re promoting. Of course you can improve the chance of a sale by effectively pre-selling the product or service, but it’s still up to the merchant to close a sale. And if they don’t sell anything to your visitors, you get nothing. Recommendation: Before promoting any product you should learn it and decide for yourself: “Would I buy it?” If the answer is “Yes” that’s greate, but if “No” you should look for better productsto promote.

Do you go through affiliate programs like most people go through pairs of socks? Many Internet marketers do. In fact, 97% of all Internet marketers never make a single cent advertising opportunities on the Internet. They jump from one opportunity to the next and never see results. If you want to break free from this cycle of failure– if you want to earn a living off of your Internet ventures–continue reading. I will tell you exactly how you can earn money from any legitimate affiliate program.

In order to get the most information from what I am about to explain to you, you must accept that these methods are not intended to be "secrets." These are scientifically-proven, best-practice methods that all top marketers use. If you want results, you will have to do and continue to do the following five things:

1. Know your product. Do not advertise for a product or affiliate program that you are not currently using. I cannot even count the amount of affiliate programs and product offers I have rejected immediately from people who know very little about what they are actually promoting. If you want to make money selling a product or service, you have to use it, understand it, and be able to convince your prospects that they should own it. If you yourself do not believe in it– because you have not even tried it–then you will have a hard time convincing anyone else it is worthwhile.

2. Know your field. You must continually become more knowledgeable about the market in which you are selling your product or service. For instance, I try to read at least 50 pages on Internet marketing each day to complement the marketing I do. This keeps me learning about my field. The best part about this is that you can do it without spending any money at all. The Internet is loaded with free content sites where you can find free ebooks and special reports on any subject. The Internet is also loaded with affiliate program promoters who are out-selling you. Use google to find these sites and then reverse engineer them–pick apart the source code, page setup, and content layout to find out how you can become more like your competition who is outselling you.

3. Focus your efforts and limit your innovation. As much as "limiting your innovation" may go against your business instincts, it is an absolute must with a limited marketing budget. Figure out what works for you scientifically by measuring your advertising results. When you find something that works, stick with it. If you are getting traffic from reciprocal links, continue to build them. If you are getting constant sign-ups from your newsletter, improve your newsletter and order more leads. Do not stray far from your original plan. Preset the amount of innovative ideas you want to try out each night, but center your marketing efforts around getting better results from methods that have already worked for you.

4. Spend money wisely. The Internet is loaded with scams and bad information. It is really easy to be tricked into blowing money on "get rich quick" schemes and information that you can find in free resources. I personally have spent thousands of dollars needlessly. But do not get me wrong; I am not saying there are no legitimate affiliate promotion services or information products out there: I am saying that the vast majority of them do not work as well as they say they do. So hold onto your cash. When you find a product that multiple people have personally recommended to you, then consider buying it. Otherwise, conserve your cash for purchasing services or products that will produce hard, definite results, such as email leads for your newsletter or phone leads you can contact personally to promote your program.

5. Remember that your success is dependent on your choices and your work alone. If you get upset about not becoming successful with a specific affiliate program, do not blame the program–blame yourself. Do a thorough analysis of what you could be doing better and how you could be making quantitative progress every single day. There are people who do not pay any money at all for promotional services and yet are still able to make a living just from using free tools on the Internet. If they can do it, there is no reason at all why you cannot. Joining a marketing group or forum in your field will help you realize this reality. Seeing and talking to people who are succeeding in your field will remind you that it is entirely possible to make money online without having a million dollars to begin with.

While there are some "secrets" to getting more sign-ups and site visitors, the bigger part of affiliate program marketing is following a sound business plan. If you keep the five concepts I have listed above central to your marketing campaign, you will not fail. But, if you continue to market sporadically–switching from product to product and method to method–you will never break out of that 97% who never make money.

Many people look at affiliate programs as one of the easiest and best ways to start a profitable online business. The reasons for this are you don’t have to worry about having your own product, collecting the money, shipping, or customer service. The affiliate company takes care of all the hassles that come with owning your own business.

Most affiliate programs are free to join while giving you the opportunity to start a business and build consistent revenue.

Today there are thousands of affiliate programs on the net that you can choose from. You will find all types of products and services that are offered; the key is choosing the right company to represent.

Look for companies that blend in with your own website. For an example, if your websites main focus were “home business opportunities”, than an affiliate program that offers products and services on building an Internet business would be an appropriate match. Signing up with targeted affiliate programs will ensure your success as an affiliate as well as create value for your website.

To join an affiliate program, you simply sign up with a company of your choice, and agree to promote their products. They in turn will give you access to their company logo, text links, banners, support, etc. You promote their products by putting their link or banner on your web site. The company will track all sales directed from your site and then they pay you a commission on that sale.

There are also companies that offer a two-tier program, whereas you receive a commission for your direct sells, as well as a percentage of commissions from anyone who signs up as an affiliate that was directed from you.

Keep in mind, that signing up with an affiliate company is not to imply that you literally have nothing to do but sit back and receive checks in the mail. To be successful with this type of business, you need to be motivated and dedicated. It takes time and effort on your part to get your business up and running. Promoting your affiliate program is the key to your success.

The latest statistics say there are over a million affiliates on the net today. The affiliates, who put forth a consistent effort to promoting their affiliate program, are the ones who are successful.

If you should hear stories of people who claim you won’t make any money with affiliate programs, it may very well be that they partnered up with a company that is not very well established. Another factor to consider is that; even though there are people signing up with affiliate companies everyday, a good majority of those people may never have applied themselves to being successful. Like with any business, you have to work at it to reach levels of success.

In my article "Affiliate Marketing What Is It And Why Use It?", I stated that only 5% of your affiliates will do 95% of the sales. If you don’t follow this guide, you might not even get that.

If you want to make your affiliates more productive, then you must make it as easy as possible to get them to do what you want them to do.

Provide them with as much help as you can, leave no questions unanswered, do as much for them as you can, so they can literally just tell people about you, your product or your service.

Provide them with banners, link text and example ads, this way they can just do a copy and paste and BAM, all their work is done (If that is all they want to do). However super affiliates will do much more than this, and thus require more care. I will talk about super affiliates in a separate article though.

Many affiliate programs just let the affiliate join then leave them on their own. This is great if you want an army of affiliates who will do nothing for you, but how many people want that?

What you want is an army of people actively going out and telling people about how great you and your website are. This will ultimately lead to more sales.

How To Do It

When you create an affiliate program, you must teach each individual affiliate what you want them to do, spell it out nice and clear. Then tell them HOW you want them to do it.

This might sound like a lot of work, but not necessarily so. You could just do the above, and put it into an autoresponder.

That way, whenever a new affiliate signs up, they will receive a handy dandy guide, giving them all the information they need so that they can start right away.

Also, it’s a great idea to include an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). This will make it much easier for them to understand what you want them to do. Be sure to list every possible question that could pop into their heads, this will also reduce the amount of email support you have to carry out.

Starting an Online business today is pretty easy and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune, unfortunately being easy to start doesn’t guarantee of success. Not to scare you off, but you need to know. It is a fact that approximately 85% of new businesses are doomed to failure in the first couple of years, for one reason or another.

Knowledge is power!

I know, you hear that all the time, but it is so true. If Online business owners would invest the time it takes to learn a skill along with the time require to learn how to operate an online business they would stay out of the 85% of failed business attempts.

How does one solve this problem? Are you ready for this…

eBooks with resell rights / resale rights / reprint rights, what ever you know them by they are the solution. To be really successful with them you really should take the time to read them and learn from them. Put that knowledge to good use and you will find that you can learn and earn.

There is a key that has to be use to gain power from knowledge and that key is ‘ACTION’. If you don’t take action you will never gain any ground and without profit you won’t last long. So don’t make the mistake of buying eBooks with resale rights and expect them to sell themselves.

eBooks with reseller rights is an excellent way to learn from experts, which makes applying these skills that much easier, because these ebooks lay it right out there for you. All you have to do is read, learn and take action.

Have I use the word ‘ACTION’ enough yet, are you getting my point? Knowledge + ACTION = Power.

Almost anything people buy comes down to benefits, because people have a ‘What’s in it for me?’ mindset. So it stands to reason that if you were to read these eBooks you would find the benefits and then you could share them with interested people, your target group.

Pick the Minds of the Masters and you will eventually become a master also and at that point you can start writing your own eBooks with resale rights. There are thousands of eBooks online that can be resold for profit. It is your job to find the information products that you are comfortable or willing to learn and then get the benefits those products provide in front of your prospects.

People today are starved for information and they are willing to pay to get the information they want. So what better way to earn a living online than to provide starving readings with digital food that has resale rights so that you can earn over and over on the same products.

There are eBooks with reseller rights on just about any topic you can imagine, and some are not the best, so you need to choose your products wisely. That is where a little bit of research goes a long ways. Like all the way to the bank.

The first step would to purchase an information product, preferably an eBook with resell rights, that will teach you the skills required to operate a successful Online business. This will save you months, even years of trial and error tactics, that destroy so many start up businesses.

Yes, you could go to the Library and sign out books on business startups but when you are done reading and learning the books have to go back to the Library. Not so with eBook with resell rights. You learn from them and you earn from them by reselling them.

Research your target group for each of the eBooks that you want to resell and give them exactly what they are looking for. What does this group type in a search engine text box to find what you want to sell them. This is where you get that great return on investment if you read the products because you will be able to tell your prospects all the benefits this product provides.

Get into the mind of your best prospect. How do your prospects find things?

It bears repeating…

There are eBooks with resale rights on just about every conceivable subject, all you have to do is find them for your target group and you will earn profit from them.

If you are like me you have hobbies and interests so put them to good use. Find products to resell that you are already an expert or at least knowledgable about. It makes it so much easier to find your target group when you are one of them.

You may be saying that so many are doing that now that the market is flooded. Well yes and no. There are a lot of people doing but they are not doing it right and therefore make no money at it.

You see people have a tendency to rush into things without proper preparation and that spells disaster. Instead of jumping in with your eyes closed, take the time to do it right and you can earn multiple streams of income from the many eBooks you will purchase, read and resell.

IMPORTANT!! Don’t just use the sales page that comes with each product. Instead learn the product for yourself and modify the sales page or create your own sales page from your perspective. Use the keywords that your best prospect would use to find what they want and make it personal, people like that.

What are the benefits you received from reading that eBook you just purchased? Right an article or review explaining the benefits and then get that article or review published and placed in front of the eyes of your best prospects.

Use the benefits and keywords to feed the search engine spider so you get a good placement on the search engine results page (SERP).

That is how you produce unlimited streams of income.

eBooks with full resell rights is a win-win-win situation. You benefited the one that sold you the book, you benefited from the content, and you can benefit others by selling it to them.

If you take away poker, dating, and naked ladies, custom merchandising is the big success story of the Internet. The ultimate combination of e-commerce and affiliate marketing, millions of websites around the world turn to online merchandising companies - both to market their URL and to extract some cash from loyal visitors.

The key to the success of the industry is on-demand printing, meaning website owners don’t usually incur setup costs and do not have to carry inventory.

The business model usually works like this. The webmaster signs up for free – or for a small monthly fee – at the merchandising company site. Having uploaded his/her own designs – often logos, catchphrases or drawings, the webmaster can then place these designs on the range of products offered by the merchandiser. Usually, the merchandise company places a base price on each product, to which the webmaster adds his/her own commission or markup. In some cases, the webmaster can then create a shop which can be integrated into their own site.

The merchandising company normally handles credit-card processing, printing, shipping, and customer service while the webmaster incurs the slightly less arduous task of collecting and banking the commissions.

Beginning to see why its so popular? Let’s have a look at some of the industry’s big players:

Cafepress

The daddy of the bunch. Founded in 1999 in California, Cafepress was one of the first companies to exploit the massive custom merchandise market. It now sells products on behalf of over 2 million website owners, mainly in the USA.

For all its longevity and wide reach, Cafepress has yet to solve many of the original problems that still bother its users. Despite the clamour from customers, the company has yet to find a way to offer black, or even dark, garments – still relying on the old white and grey staples and a rather odd collection of pastels. Nor has the company embraced internationalisation, and website owners outside of the USA still baulk at hefty shipping charges and US Dollar pricing.

The free Cafepress service offers limited functionality to users, with only one version of each product allowed. For a monthly fee, Cafepress allows unlimited selling. However, excessive branding makes it rather difficult to integrate the Cafeshop into the look and feel of an existing site.

Zazzle

Another California-based company that launched a similar service to Cafepress in 2003 and has a substantial share of the US market. Again pricing is only available in US Dollars. And while Zazzle’s range of garment colours is stronger than Cafepress, printing on black or dark shirts is still not supported.

Zazzle does not charge a monthly fee but webmasters will find it rather more difficult to integrate their shop into the look and feel of their own site.

Spreadshirt

This one looks interesting. Spreadshirt was founded in Germany in 2002 and boasts over 60,000 partners across Europe, winning the Hewlett Packard Business Innovation Award in 2004. Unlike its American competitors, Spreadshirt caters for both European and US customers, using regional shipping companies and allowing webmasters to price products in Euros, Sterling, or US Dollars. Shops can also be automatically translated into eight languages.

Spreadshirt has also solved the thorny "black shirt" issue, offering over 50 products in a full range of colours. However, it’s probably the different printing options that sets the service apart. In particular, Spreadshirt’s "flock" printing – creating a raised felt finish – produces a result much more impressive than regular digital print.

Finally, hats off to Spreadshirt for managing to keep its branding on the product but still allow webmasters full control over the look and feel of their shops. Already a dominant force in the European market, Spreadshirt could be set to give Cafepress a run for their money in the US.

EShirt

EShirt is another European company – this time Italian-based - providing an almost-identical product range to Cafepress ie no dark shirts. Euro, US Dollar and Sterling pricing is available. However, the only print option available is digital hot press printing – not the longest lasting technique.

The most inconvenient aspect of EShirt’s service is shop integration. You must register as a Tradedoubler affiliate before you can even apply for an EShirt shop. And even then, it is not possible to recreate the look and feel of your own site.
