For many website owners who do not have a product or service of their own to sell, it can be hard to make money online. Sure, you could sell advertising space, but unless you attract a large amount of traffic to your site, nobody will pay you a pretty penny to have you advertise their site. So, you don’t have any product or service to sell and advertising wont bring in an income worth celebrating over. What do you do now? The solution is simple: Affiliate Marketing.

Affiliate marketing is a simple concept and millions of websites rely on affiliate marketing to bring in the bulk of their sales. Basically, you try and sell other people’s products for a commission. Commission can be anywhere from 5 to 75 percent of the price of the product. Generally speaking, your software, information products, and services provide the highest rate of commission. It’s easy finding products in those categories that provide 50 to 75 percent commission!

The most effective way to convert your traffic to sales is to make sure that the products and services you are advertising on your website target your visitors. If your site deals with automobiles, trying to market someone else’s cook book will fail and if I could take a bet, generate zero income.

Another helpful tip is to make sure your advertisement doesn’t look like an advertisement. People do not visit your site to pay any attention to the banner ads placed everywhere. They visit your site for information on what you provide. If your site deals with online dating, write several reviews on different online dating services out there on the Internet with links to the services.

So exactly how does this work? How do these people know that you are the one responsible for the sales lead and not somebody else? When you sign up as an affiliate for different products and services, you are given a special link to place on your website. When one of your visitors clicks your link, the website you are referring visitors to knows that the visitor came from your site. Then, if the visitor purchases that website’s product or service, you are credited for the sale and earn the commission.

When looking for a product to market as an affiliate, visit some websites selling products or services that relate to your website’s information. Many of these sites will have affiliate programs and have a link placed on their site with information on how you can sign up to be an affiliate with them. Many of these sites use commission services like Commission Junction and Clickbank to take care of all the commissions, so it might be a good idea to go ahead and sign up with these services. Once signed up with them, you will find many other products and services to promote relating to your website’s content.

Affiliate marketing along with selling advertising on your website (check out Google Adsense) is an amazing and very profitable way of generating income for your site. It cost nothing and there is no inventory to keep. It’s all pure profit. What could be better?

With a vast number of goods and services being advertised and proliferating on the Internet, web site operators and marketers are constantly in search of people and companies that will help them sell their products. And because everything is interconnected on the worldwide web, linking up with other sites is a great and quick way to get the word on your services around.

This is called affiliate marketing.

An affiliate marketing program is a deal that allows two or more parties to share revenue. What happens is you, as an affiliate, will get to generate funds from product owners or marketers who use your site to advertise their goods and services. Through an affiliate marketing scheme, affiliates can refer people who visit their site to someone else’s and paid a commission, or referral fee, when web users click on the the link to the advertised site.

When you really think about it, it’s a win-win deal. Not only will you gain more traffic to your site, you will also earn some bucks while you’re at it. And you dont even need to break a single sweat.

There are generally two types of affiliate marketing programs: single-tier and two-tier. Singe-tier affiliate marketing programs pay you a fee for any sale referred and that’s just about all there is to it. Meanwhile, with a two-tier scheme, you are also paid an additional commission based on an agreed percentage from the sales generated from the people you recruited and made a transaction.

Commission in affiliate marketing programs usually go between 5% and 15% of the price of the service or product purchased. On some sites, this percentage could as high as 10%!

There are various forms of affiliate marketing tools. They may come in the form of banners, reviews, text links, direct emails and others. Affiliates are paid when they allow advertisers to place ads on their sites, or for every click on the said ad, or both. It all really depends on your arrangement with your affiliate. Everything in this business is negotiable anyway.

So do you think you need to join an affiliate marketing family? Give it a try. Most of those who join affiliate programs are startup Internet businesses that are looking to expand their client base, e-business operators with an intention to diversify their target markets and income and even e-biz owners that are already established. There really is no clear-cut candidate for affiliate marketing programs. If you feel it will help you and your business, then, by all means, go for it!

How does an affiliate marketing program benefit you?

Simple. You get paid for something you didn’t really have to work too hard for. Sure, the referral fees are low, but when you consider the volume of Internet users perusing the Web every minute, getting high returns will not be too difficult in the long run.

Also, it allows you to give your own home business a good start by linking up with other like-minded e-entrepreneurs.

In order, to protect yourself from getting duped, though, as, let’s face it, not all affiliate marketing programs are legitimate, read the contract thoroughly first. Once you feel comfortable with the arrangements, get started. You really have nothing much to lose.

Affiliate marketers are always looking for new products or services that give them the biggest paycheck. They think this is a sure win tactic that would make them rich. In fact, affiliate marketing is more than just looking for new products or services to market. To succeed as an affiliate marketer, you need a game plan, hard work to implement it.

In this article, I want to share eight survival tactics with you, the affiliate marketer. These eight tactics do not just sound great on paper. They are doable and proven to work. With these eight survival tactics, you will be able to increase your sales and survive in the affiliate marketing arena.

Here are the eight survival tactics…

1. Use separate web pages to promote each product you are marketing. Do not lump all the products you are promoting on one web page. Consider having different websites for different products. Yes, you have to spend additional money on web hosting and domain names. For best results, have a website focused on just a single product or at the most a product group.

Always include product reviews on your website. This will give your website visitors an initial understanding of how the products you are promoting can benefit them.

2. Write articles highlighting the basic benefits and features of the products you are promoting. Highlight special points. Make your article compelling and include call to act on the information, but a word of caution here. Go easy with your sales pitch at this juncture. I say, write articles, not full fletch sales copies. The idea is to pre-sell the product you are promoting. Your goal is to get your website visitor to click on your affiliate links. Let the product owners do the sales talk.

Strategically insert your affiliate links into your articles. Use sidebars and P.S.

3. Offer free reports to your readers. Position your offers at the very top of your page, so they would not be missed. Create auto-responder messages that will be mailed to those who input their personal information into your sign up box. According to research, it normally takes seven contacts with a prospect before a sale is closed.

Only two things can possibly happen when visitors land on your website. Either they become your referrals from whom you earn your affiliate income or leave your web page and never return So, this is your only chance of getting them to leave their email address and following up on them later. Offer something of value like a special report in exchange for their personal details.

4. Deliver useful information and leads into your subscribers’ inboxes. This is key to keeping your subscribers subscribed to your list. Give them useful information and leads they could act on to improve their life and business. As long as your subscribers subscribed to your mailing list, they are your prospective buyers. Hence the popular saying in the Internet marketing circle: The money is in the list.

5.Take the opportunity in your mailings to remind gently your subscribers of the product they had shown interest in earlier on. In two or two three short sentences using a sidebar or P.S. at the end of your message, pre-sell the benefits of the product you are promoting. Focus on important points like how your product can make life and things easier and more enjoyable.

Convince those who signed up for your free reports that they will be missing something big if they do not avail of your products or services.

6. Write compelling subject lines in your mailings. Your subject line is the first line that your readers read in your emails. Many emails do not get read because of weak subject lines. Write compelling subject lines that draw the attention of your subscribers. Avoid using the word "free" because there are older Spam filters that dump mails with free in the subject lines. This defeats your email marketing campaign.

7. Focus on affiliate programs that pay monthly income. It makes sense to promote affiliate programs that pay monthly income than those that pay a one-time commission.

For example the cost of joining XXY membership site is 29.95. Let’s say you stand to earn 10.00 for everyone who signs up through your affiliate link. XXY membership site continues to pay you 10.00 monthly as long as those whom you referred stay subscribed. If you are able to get 50 members in a month, it means a 500.00 paycheck.

You continue to earn monthly commissions from the same customer base.

8. Attract targeted target. Just think, if the person who visited your website has no interest whatsoever in what you are offering, they will be among those who move on and never come back. Write articles for publication in e-zines that are related to the products or services you are promoting. This is one way you focus on your target customers and grab their interest.

Try to write a minimum of two articles per week that are at least 300-600 words in length. By continually writing and distributing these articles you can attract as many as 100 targeted readers to your website in a day.

Always remember that only one out of 100 people are likely to buy your product or get your services. If you can generate as much as 1,000 targeted hits for your website in a day, that means you can made ten sales based on the average statistics.

The tactics given above are doable. It just requires a little time and an action plan on your part. Use these tactics for several affiliates programs. You can end up with a steady stream of income.

Act on these eight tactics today.

Think of the huge paychecks you will be receiving.

There are three big affiliate networks out there that have thousands of products to promote. The big 3 networks are Commission Junction, Click Bank and Linkshare. There are also a lot of smaller affiliate networks and thousands if not hundreds of thousands of affiliate programs run in-house (ran by the same company that sells the product).

When you are searching for products to promote at Commission Junction (CJ) check the EPC in your account manager. EPC = earnings per hundred clicks. If a product has a $50 EPC on average an affiliate earns $50 dollars per every hundred visitors they send to the product or merchant’s website. CJ will give you a weekly and a 3 month average EPC. The higher the EPC the more money affiliates are earning.

When searching for a product at Click Bank look at the product’s gravity. This is done in score form and the criteria is how many affiliates are selling the product and how well the product is selling. This does not give you an average of how much the product is earning per hundred visitors but if the product has a high gravity score than it is selling well.

One thing to keep in mind is that just because a product has a high EPC or Gravity score doesn’t mean everything. I have had success with products that have had high and low EPC’s and Gravity. These metrics should only be used as a guide. A Niche product might not have a lot of affiliates promoting it so the gravity could be low, but it could still be very profitable. A product could have a low EPC but maybe it’s not being advertised effectively.

One disadvantage of high gravity is the higher the gravity the higher the number of affiliates promoting the product. That means more competition. EPC doesn’t quite work the same way, you can have 1 person promoting a product and you will still see the EPC whether it is high or low. With CJ there is a "Network Earnings" indicator bar that goes from one to five to show how many affiliates are promoting a merchant’s website. One being not many affiliates and five being a lot of affiliates.

You have to be a little more careful when promoting an in-house affiliate product. The reasons for this is there are no 3rd parties involved to make sure that everything is kept honest. Try to find out a companies reputation before promoting their products. You can search for the company name, product name, search affiliate forums and search engines to find out if affiliates have horror or success stories about the company. No matter how good a product is or sells there will always be some complaints. Nobody has a 100% success or customer satisfaction rate.

Before promoting any product visit the website and ask yourself the following:

Is the website easy to navigate?

Does the website look professional?

If I was looking to buy this product, would this website convince me to do so?

If there are a few competing affiliate products in the same market that interest you, try promoting them all. Test which one is the best seller and promote that one the most. If you have 2 that are profitable keep promoting both. I have promoted many products and constantly weed out the losers. Sometimes you will try 3 products and they will all lose money, sometimes they will all make money, sometimes 1 out of 3 will make money. The important thing is weeding out the losers and finding winners.

The 7 Lost Secrets

Secret 1: The Right Market

This is one of the most important secrets to your work at home moms’ online business. The right market must be popular (meaning there is demand), penetrable (meaning it’s not too competitive) and profitable (people are willing to buy).

To research the popularity, you can use keyword tools like The Dowser keyword research tool, Good Keywords tool or Wordtracker to research the demand and supply in your market.

Check out the publications in your local bookstores as well. If there are recurring advertisements in a publication over months, chances are that the advertiser is making money and there is demand for whatever they are selling.

Also, your market has to be “rabid” and “illogical”. They must be willing to spend.

Secret 2: The Right Products

People come online to search for a solution to their problems. Hence it is crucial to “give them what they come online to search for”. You should also conduct a market survey to find out what people want.

Secret 3: The Right System

One of the biggest mistakes that affiliates make is sending their traffic direct to the merchants’ website. If you do so, all your marketing efforts can be considered to be wasted. The recommended way to follow is to create an opt-in page to capture pertinent information such as the first name and email address of your website visitors before you redirect them to the merchant’s webpage. With the leads captured, you could always follow up with them and build a relationship.

Secret 4: The Right Message

An oft-quoted phrase in internet marketing is this, “The money is in the follow up.”

Build a relationship with your list of subscribers and you will be sure to generate tons more commissions through helping them.

Secret 5: The Right Traffic

Not all traffic is created equal. What we want to find is quality traffic, i.e. highly targeted visitors. There are 4 main sources to generate highly targeted traffic, namely through pay-per-click advertising, ezine writing, article writing and co-op traffic.

Secret 6: Backend Commissions

Would you rather sell once or be able to sell to your list over-and-over again? The key to affiliate wealth is to create a list, build a relationship with your subscribers and recommend quality products over and over again to them.

Secret 7: Create Your Affiliate Blueprint

The following is a 7-day blueprint:

1. Find a market.
2. Find products.
3. Set up an Opt-in Page.
4. Create a series of messages
5. Backend
6. Generate traffic
7. Generate traffic.

Now that you know the 7 Lost Secrets, are you ready to take your first step towards building your online business? Remember, “The journey of a thousand miles start with a single step”. To be successful work at home moms, you need to take that first step.

A few weeks ago I got a call from guy named Peter.

Peter is a hard working guy who is desperately looking for a way to make money at home.

He hates his job, has no formal education and has no idea where to start. The only "lead" he has on what to do is joint venture marketing which he read about on one of my sites.

In other words, he likes the idea of selling business A’s product to business B (and vice versa), and taking a cut of the profit — which is what joint venture marketing is.

However, he still didn’t know where to start or what to do. He didn’t know how to find product owners. He figured if he could find product owners, it would be easy to find out other businesses to sell to. Plus, he was worried he had no reputation and didn’t know if anyone would really take him seriously.

I told him the solution to his problem was actually very simple. And if you are looking for a fast home business to start, you can use this exact same solution I gave him, too.

Here is what I told him:

I suggested that Peter try to acquire other older products by experts in a niche he was interested in and leverage off of that person’s credibility.

For example, a few years ago I found an expert on buying businesses. I saw his ad on ebay. I emailed him, talked with him and asked if I could take a whack at helping him sell his business buying system.

He said yes, and I’ve sold nearly $100,000 worth of that product on my site and on ebay since.

And you know what?

You can do the same thing.

Search around online, in your home town, or on ebay — and find an expert in a niche you want to sell to. Find out if they have a product to sell — even if it’s an older one. Get the rights to sell it and then start a simple business selling it.

This is one of the easiest and simplest home businesses you can start and make money with you will ever see. It’s simple, it’s fast and will work for you if simply do the steps.

This is the most important part of a Joint Venture (JV) Process, "What have you got to offer?".

In fact, in any business, if you’ve got nothing of value, you’ll get nothing.

You have to create an offer that is unique and attractive to your prospect that they would be crazy to refuse.

Why?

Because competition for affiliate’s attention, especially with the ‘Super Affiliates’, are not easy. You just have to make it very favourable and worthwhile for them to review your product and promote it.

Ask yourself, ‘Why should they work with you, when they can work with someone else?’

If you want attention from a potential JV partner, stand out from the crowd.

Offer a quality product wrapped with an incentive that can’t be turned down, sa over 60% commission.

‘Dangle that Carrot!’ and really drive the benefits of offering your product to your Joint Venture partner’s list!

Here’s an example of a possible JV process.

Say, you have a quality eBook packed full of quality information and tips on building your list quickly for a succesful online business.

Here’s a pitch to a JV prospect:

1) Offer *FREE* rebranding rights to the eBook and affiliate links;

2) Offer to advertise their product or service at a prominent position in the eBook;

3) Offer 70% Commission for any sales generated from their list. And if you have the facility to offer 2-tier commission, offer a further 10% commission;

Don’t know about you, but that should get someone knocking down your door!

And in return, you want them to send a solo mailing to their list promoting the eBook.

The solo mailing will have their affiliate link to the eBook, and any sales that comes in will automatically generate them a 70% commission!

As you can see, the offer is way, way favourable for a JV!

The first intention is to gain the JV propsect’s attention with bells and whistles that will stand out.

However the goal is to build your list…And make some profit along the way from the solo mailing.

This is the type of JV you will benefit for years to come!

You have to make your product and offer too irresistible to turn down.

Once your JV partner is hooked, watch your list of subsribers and affiliates skyrocket on auto.

In a recent web content for one of our clients, I sang paeans to Google Adsense earnings’ potential. In particular, I was referred to an article in USA Today [http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2006-03-28-googe-adsense_x.htm] that showcased instances of substantial Google Adsense earnings by "third-world" website owners for whom Google’s doles are like god-sent (never mind Google’s own skyrocketing revenue from Adsense). Since I was constrained by my client’s need to write on virtues of Adsense while authoring his web content, I couldn’t focus on ‘allegedly’ darker sides of Adsense. I say ‘allegedly’ because it is not clear whether Google really is the culprit as made out to be. Be that as it may, let me turn to what a few website owners faced while trying to claim a pie of Google Adsense earnings.

Stas Bekman’s story

Stas started publishing Adsense ads on his website from December, 2005. His site was already receiving 600 page-views a day, so Stas thought Adsense ads would be ideal to put his site-estate to perfect use. Since Adsense delivered highly targeted ads, there was always a chance that his viewers would click on the ads resulting in revenues for both Stas and Google. He was not off the mark in his assumption. The ads displayed on his website did generate clicks, and on one day the number of clicks surged to 169. This generated Stas’s Google Adsense earnings of $32 on a single day. The ‘WOW’ however didn’t last long.

Google came hotfooted and charged Stas of generating invalid clicks from his website, suspending his account promptly. Whatever his Google Adsense earnings were at the time of suspension also stood withdrawn. Since Stas didn’t pull down the ads immediately though they were of no use to him for the time being, it remained unclear as to who earned the commission money for the clicks generated during this period.

Stas got going immediately and after a series of email correspondence, his account was finally restored by Google a few days later. Stas apparently agreed that deliberate clicks (click fraud) triggered the episode (which Google too said). But the question remained as to who did that? As it turned out, Stas had to forego $30 of his Google Adsense earnings. He didn’t mind. He reasoned that for all its supposed follies, Adsense does fetch money for his website. What has Stas got to say on his experience? Taste this:

"…the next time you get excited by all those books and sites touting Google Ads as your greatest source of revenue, think twice before you waste your time and energy on something that is *not* under your control and can be taken away by a malicious user in co-operation with Google AdSense team. Google AdSense is undeniably a great tool when it works, but I’d definitely love to have a better control over it."

Click here to read Stas Bekman’s story.

Benjamin Cohen’s account

A similar experience is reflected in Benjamin’s account. In his case, after Adsense earnings stopped for him for the first time, Benjamin waited awhile and applied afresh. He got a new account but that too was terminated by Google for alleged ‘click fraud’. Though he gives a fair measure of his Google Adsense earnings each time his account operated, Benjamin fails to mention anything regarding number of clicks or whether there were anomalies in them. After going couple of times through Benjamin’s article, I concluded that more information would be needed to know what exactly happened. Benjamin complains about the VAT payments but that is something not directly related to Google Adsense earnings per se.

Benjamin Cohen’s account can be reached here.

The truth

The truth must lie between what Stas and Benjamin faced and the policies of Google Adsense. Let me turn to what Google has to advise on Adsense. To be sure, Google has lined up many success stories that range from health website to home improvement site to even one that deals in aircraft seating information for frequent flyers. If you feel intrigued, there’s perhaps a reason or two there. The common thread is the fact that many site-owners do have bulging Google Adsense earnings.

Speaking on behalf of Google, its reluctance to spell out all that we want to know is understandable, given the fact that the contextual advertising scene is becoming very competitive with each passing day. Having said that, I want to echo Stas’s wish of having more control on Adsense account. In the least, let Google automatically filter self-clicks and not count them for revenue. YPN (Yahoo! Publisher Network) is already doing that. Why Google cannot is a mystery. If Google takes care of this small scruple, it’ll make life easy for many site owners like Stas and Benjamin.

Summing up

Perhaps Google has reasons to act against Stas and Benjamin like it did. Perhaps not. Is the reason attempted click fraud? If so, what about their insistence that they didn’t do what Google says they did? Even as the debate continues, let there be no doubt that the lure of handsome Google Adsense earnings is too much for small website owners to not abstain from opting for it.
