Are you a novice online marketer?

If you are anything like I was when I started out you’ve probably seen the hundreds of ads claiming quick riches for little or no work. One thing you should know up front: no matter what the program, or what its ad copy promises, you will need to do some work in order to generate profits.

Online marketing could be defined as promoting, selling, and delivering goods or services online. The good news is, they don’t have to be your goods or services, and you don’t have to have your own website in order to profit from this relatively new income vehicle.

What you will need though, is a web address (URL) – but more about that later.

So, where do you begin?

One of the easiest ways to profit online is through affiliate programs. Affiliate programs are set up by vendors in order to increase their sales. They are basically employing an online sales force. Affiliates sign up for the vendors’ program and are paid for referring people to the vendors’ web site. The affiliate may get paid per click, per sale, or per lead, depending on the affiliate program. The most common though is to be paid per sale.

To accomplish this you, as an affiliate marketer, only need to get prospects to go to the vendor’s website, once there, it is the job of that website to finish the sale. For this reason it is important that you choose wisely before blindly diving into any affiliate program. First, you need to decide if the vendor’s website would entice you to make a purchase. If the answer is no, chances are it is not going to be a profitable affiliate site.

To find a good affiliate program check out one of the following: Clickbank (specializes in downloadable products), Commission Junction, and Share It (just add the .com). These sites offer thousands of affiliate programs between them and with a little research you should be able to find a good one.

Getting your own domain name

Once you’ve found an affiliate program you’d like to represent, head over to GoDaddy.com and buy yourself a domain name. You need a domain name for several reasons, but the most important are: it will give you a good advertising image; You’ll be able to track visitors; and it will give you the ability to switch landing pages.

You can get a domain name at GoDaddy.com for about $9.00 – very cheap. In fact, for every affiliate program you intend to promote you should get yourself a domain name.

You should choose your domain names carefully. Pick something that represents what you are marketing. For instance, if you are an affiliate for a company that sells car seat covers, choose a name like car-seat-covers4U.com. This will help your image even further, and if you decide to develop a website at some point you’ll have a great URL in place and ready to go.

Masking your domain

Once you have the domain name, go to your GoDaddy back office and choose Manage Domains. Next click on your new URL. Then click on Forwarding. Now you’ll see a link that states, “Domain is not forwarded. Click here to see details or to modify”. Click on that link then do the following:

  1. In the Forward To box, type in your affiliate URL.
  2. Check the Mask Domain box.
  3. Click Save Changes.

Once this is done it will take about 24 hrs for the changes to take place. After that start promoting your new URL and it will automatically take prospects to your affiliate website.

Marketing your affiliate sites

Now you are ready to start your marketing campaign. There are just too many ways you can market the site to cover here, but I will go over a few of the best and perhaps easiest:

  • Put your masked affiliate URL in the signature box of your emails. This is one of the most overlooked yet easiest ways to market an affiliate program.

  • Join two or three online forums that are somehow connected to what you are marketing. If you’re promoting skate boards, go to Google and type in “skate board” +forums, or go to their Forums link and type in Skate Boards. Once you’ve found a couple of online forums, visit regularly and offer opinions and advice, or answer or ask questions. Make sure to put your new affiliate URL and a few lines of copy in your signature box at the end of each post. One word of warning though. Don’t under any circumstances promote your affiliate products in your posts. Doing so will quickly get you kicked out of the forums.
  • Write an e-book or manual about the topic of your affiliate program. In the e-manual or book include your masked link. Sell it on EBay for 0.99cents. Doing this you are effectively giving the book away, but because it has your affiliate links in it there’s every possibility that readers will click the links and go on to purchase something you will get paid a commission on.
  • Write articles and submit them to ezines such as EzineArticle.com. You’ll have a resource box to put your affiliate links in at the end of each article. The articles will be picked up by webmasters and used in other ezines, on web pages etc. and you’ll get a lot of exposure. Study this article to see how I’m doing just that. I’ve used ezine articles on various ezine sites to make thousands of dollars promoting my main business. You could easily do the same, just study this article to see how I do it.
  • There are many other ways you can promote affiliate sites, I’ve barely scratched the surface, but with just the techniques I’ve outlined here you could soon be making a good living online.

When it comes to finding a powerful and effective method of earning money using the internet affiliate marketing is the way to go. Every person, regardless of which industry they are involved in, has the ability to take advantage of this type of program and earn a profit, using the internet. In fact, affiliate marketing programs are becoming extremely popular and widely used, thanks to the ease of use and commission paid to those who do become an affiliate member.

When it comes to those within the affiliate marketing business, of course as with any other business, it has its share of downfalls as well. If you find your business is losing profit instead of making it, you could be committing one of the costly mistakes that many people in the business experience commonly. This article will help you avoid these mistakes, which will in turn allow you to create a profit instead of the other way around.

Failure to choose the right affiliate program

Typically, people are looking to start earning money on the marketing program right away. Therefore, they tend to take part in the program they might think is the “hot” product or service at that point in time. Essentially, the product they choose may not particularly appeal to them, however, because they think it is popular they will choose to join. This could be a costly mistake when it comes to choosing an affiliate program.

To be honest, the affiliate needs to be interested in the product they choose. Why is appeal needed? Because, in order to properly market your affiliate program, you need to have some interest in the product, in order to conduct research, and promote that product. You have to have passion for the product in order to succeed in the program.

Taking advantage of Multiple Affiliate Programs

Because there are so many easy to join affiliate programs, it is very tempting to join every one you find that appeals to you. In your minds eye, this allows you to maximize your earning potential. Many people are in the mind set, that since they have nothing to lose and everything to gain, by joining an affiliate program, they should join as many as possible.

However, the truth of the matter is, while it does create the possibility of generating multiple income sources, in reality, you are spreading yourself too thin. Essentially, when you have too many affiliate programs, you are leaving yourself with less time to concentrate and focus on any one program, which means your promotion plan could lack some essential time and attention.

When this happens, your earning potential is decrease and the maximum earnings will never be realized. The best advice is to stick with one affiliate program that pays a good commission of around at least 40%. Take this one program and promote it with all your might. After effectively marketing and promoting that one program, then seeing a suitable profit from it, you may be able to take on another affiliate program later.

We all want to make money fast; however, spreading yourself too thin is definitely not the answer. It is important in the affiliate business, especially when there are so many to choose from, to take it one thing at a time.

Promoting a Service or Product you have never used

Finally, when you choose to join an affiliate program, the important thing is that you convincingly and effectively promote the service or product you are trying to sell, to ultimately bring in the customers. However, you cannot ever hope to achieve this in an effective manner, if you yourself have never used the service or product. That is like trying to sell any product at a store, without having ever touched it, looked at it, or even experienced it. How can you ever hope to spread the word about all the great things the business will do and get your customers to click your link, if you have no clue yourself?

You have to have faith in the company and have experienced the service or product for yourself, if you ever hope to sell it to your visitors. Many people will listen if you tell them you have personally used the items and perhaps be more apt to click that link, than if you were to never offer up any advice, testimony, or information at all about the product within the affiliate program.

The above three mistakes are some of the most common mistakes that affiliate marketers today make. Each one of these actions will result in the affiliate program failing to product results. Therefore, it is important that you fully research the affiliate program, product, services, and take things one at a time. Do not rush in the haste of wanting to make a profit, or you may find, you have no profit at all coming in.

In today’s increasingly expensive society, a need for a second income arises more and more each day. The problem with this is that no one has the time to get a second job, so we often Google various methods of making money online. Unfortunately, with all of the money making schemes online today, it’s hard to really trust that one method really works. I, myself, went through this same problem. Spending money on e-books that tell you all these “easy” ways to make money can empty your pockets rather than fill them. Especially because most of these schemes require you to have some sort of expertise of the internet. Now because of this, these schemes may seem like scams, but you have to look at them from a different way. I was fortunate enough to realize that is a plethora of resources available and it’s very possible to make money using MySpace as your gateway.

Since MySpace is the internet’s largest online community, this is the easiest way to advertise or reach millions of people with just a push of a button. This is the bread and butter to making money online. All you need is traffic to wherever you want people to go. Whether it’s selling something, or just PPC (pay per click) advertising, traffic will generate turnover and put money in your pocket. I know from experience that the way to make money on MySpace is easier than you think.

First, you need a way to generate revenue. You can start by joining an affiliate program network. Affiliates programs are when you will advertise a product for a specific seller. Every person that is forwarded to the seller’s website through YOUR advertising, you will make a percentage of the profit, it’s that simple. They seller will provide you specifically coded links that you can post anywhere on the internet, and these links will refer back to your program every time someone uses them. You can also start a blog. On your blog you can have PPC ads which generate revenue for you. After a while, it’s money straight into your pocket. But first you need to get people to click your links and visit your site. This is where MySpace comes in.

With MySpace, you can use bulletins, messages, or comments to post these links, but you have to do so carefully and discretely. You don’t want it to look like spam. You also have to build a large friend list with MySpace. With a large friend list, you can reach all of your friends with the push of a button. The method that I use is with a friend adding program like The Official MySpace Friend Adder. With a program like this, you can add 500 friends per day, and reach out to millions automatically. This program alone has generated hundreds of thousands of referrals to my affiliate programs. All I do now is create a cool looking bulletin with my affiliate link embedded within it, and send it out automatically. Just today I reached over 14,000 people without having to do anything. The great part of this is that I’ve had a great amount of turnover from these people. But you have to make the bulletin’s look interesting. You can do the same thing through commenting. Wirh a good friend adding program like The Official Friend Adder, you can send comments to everyone at the same time. With this you can even post your links on someone’s page and allow people that aren’t on your friend list to click on them.

Making money with MySpace is such an easy way to generate a second income. Just follow the steps I provided, get yourself a friend adding program, and you will be making money in no time.

PaulG is an expert on internet social groups, especially MySpace. Add up to 500 MySpace friends per day, leave tons of comments and messages, and gain traffic to your MySpace profile by checking out The Official MySpace Friend Adder. Try it out for free!

It is vital that you understand the language of affiliate marketing. It is important that you know what it means in order to sign up for programs that are worth your time.

Also read the terms and conditions for affiliates because not knowing these can bring you in serious trouble. You should at least understand the following terms and abbreviations.

Super Affiliate: This refers to anyone who is making a lot of money in affiliate marketing, if you are an affiliate. However, if you have an affiliate program for your own product, this refers to your top affiliates: the ones who are making the most sales for you.

Opt-In: This refers to ezine subscriptions, newsletter subscriptions, or email lists in general. Basically, it means that the subscribers on any email list have chosen to receive the information the list owner is sending. Typically, they have confirmed their email address and their request by clicking on a link in a confirmation email, which is known as double opt-in.

1st Tier and 2nd Tier: If you are signing up for an affiliate program, directly through the company, you are first tier. If you are signing up under someone else, you are 2nd tier. However, when someone signs up under you, you are first tier, and they are your 2nd tier. Each tier gets a different commission rate for sales. In other words, when you sign up under someone else, when you make a sale, you get a full commission, and the person you signed up under gets a partial commission.

Joint Ventures: Joint ventures are similar to affiliate programs, but they operate a bit differently. The concept is the same: one person promotes another person’s product for a commission. However, usually the commissions are bigger, and the person doing the promoting is working directly with the owner of the product.

Direct Mail: This refers to advertising that is done via postal mail. There are strict laws about direct mail, and many affiliate programs will have terms and conditions relating to direct mail to promote their product.

Cookies: A cookie is a piece of code that is written to the cookie file on a person’s computer when they click on an affiliate link or when they visit sites that use cookies, such as sites that require a login. The cookie does not harm your customer’s computer at all, and is simply there to make sure that you get credit for the sale if they come back later to make a purchase.

Affiliate Agreement: The agreement that usually lists the terms and conditions related to an affiliate program. In most cases, you will agree to the affiliate agreement by checking a box when you fill out an online form to join the program. Some affiliate programs, however, will require you to print out, sign, and fax the agreement. Make sure you read these agreements.

Conversion Rate: This is the number of sales in relation to the number of clicks received. Usually portrayed as a percentage.

Commission: The amount of money that you as an affiliate will receive per sale. Some companies will list this as a percentage, such as 50%, while others will list it as a dollar figure.

Associate or Associate Program: This is the same as an affiliate program.

Banner Ad: A graphic that is placed on your website and linked with your affiliate link.

If at any time you come across other terms or abbreviations of which you don’t know the meaning then try to find out what they are about. This may avoid problems later on.

Every day, hundreds of thousands of people stay at home and enjoy life. At the end of the day, they log in to see how much money they made that day, yawn, stretch, and then go to bed.

The next day, they do the same thing. Wake up, enjoy life, and earn a full income without lifting a finger.

People are doing this all the time. Then there is the rest of the world, those who want to make money online, but don’t know where to start or are afraid of the costs and/or time involved.

As an internet marketer who specializes in helping people to begin working from home, the most common question that I’m asked is, "Where do I start?" The internet is a vast ocean, and many people get lost while trying to swim towards financial freedom.

There are many ways to make money online, but the easiest way to get started is also the best way to make huge amounts of money very quickly. The secret lies in affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing starts with the concept of an e-product. That is, a product that is available via download and/or online subscription. This includes memberships, ebooks, manuals, and even software and scripts. The creators of these products rely on affiliates to sell their products for them. For this service, they pay a hefty percentage - usually 50% or better. They market themselves to the affiliate community in hopes of finding individuals who will sell their product for pay. From there, the affiliates market the products with the hopes of making a sale.In order to connect with affiliates willing to sell their products, there are companies that connect sellers with affiliates and handle the commissions for all parties.

When a sale is made, every party benefits: The end user purchases the product and is able to get it instantly via the internet. The creator of the product gets a percentage of the sale (Total - affiliate commission = profit) and didn’t have to do anything. The affiliate gets a percentage of the sale, and they didn’t even have to create a product.

People dedicate countless hours to making affiliate marketing profitable. Some do it with a website. Some do it without a website, and instead simply promote the products by buying advertising space on certain search engines. Some do it through their blogs, others through their internet communities, and still others via forums. The opportunities are endless, and people make gobs and gobs of money every single day.

"Where do I start?" Become an affiliate. Find a company that will match you up with sellers. No company ever turns down affiliates. Start selling their products to your internet communities. Generate cash. Enjoy your life.

The first question many people should ask themselves is why they want to get into affiliate marketing. Is it to earn a little extra money to pay bills and have a few little luxuries every now and again? Is it because they have a desire to work from home and this could be one way in which they could give up their day job and concentrate on affiliate marketing full time?

Affiliate marketing can be one of the easiest and least expensive ways of doing business on the internet. But, as in most walks of life, it does take commitment and dedication.

Like any other business venture, and affiliate marketing is no exception, you have to acquaint yourself with the basic knowledge and skills that are needed to succeed online. You need to educate yourself in the basics of internet marketing and how to make money on the internet. After all, that is why you are doing it, right? If not then it will only ever be a hobby.

Nowadays, there is too much information on affiliate marketing out there on the internet and the difficulty is in finding the right information. All of this information out there can lead to confusion and even despair as you try to figure out which information to follow and which route to go down with your online business. By all means read everything you can on the subject but approach it with an open mind. Try to sort out the good from the bad.

Much of the information available is hyped up and, as we are only too aware these days, there are many online scams to avoid. As with any business venture, you have to start by learning the basic skills involved and then create a plan to follow. No matter how much you learn, it will all be to no avail if you do not take action. Planned action is what it is all about, one step at a time.

To many people, affiliate marketing is unfamiliar territory. Because of this, it can cause them to procrastinate and delay in order to avoid actually having to do anything. Some people just like to read about affiliate marketing but never actually get around to doing it seriously. They dabble in it in a small way and when they find that it is not working in their particular case, they think the whole thing is a waste of time. Like any journey, affiliate marketing starts with the first step which is probably the most difficult step of all to take.

One way to learn is to read about the opinions of others who have "trodden the path", possibly with the same affiliate program they are considering. The idea is to learn from their experiences including their successes and, very often more importantly, their mistakes. There are many mistakes to be made in affiliate marketing, especially when you are new to the game, and you should be aware of these as early as possible.

There are affiliate marketing programs for almost any product and it is a case of choosing a good program that pays well and fits your interest or business. With affiliate marketing, as with any other business venture, people cannot expect to start earning the big money early on in a very short period of time. Like any business, affiliate marketing does take a bit of time to get started, but once you get established, it is possible to make a very good living from it. Remember though, it takes time, dedication and a plan.

A long time ago (in my Father’s time) companies hired employees and kept them. They treated them like valuable assets to the company, and regardless of hard times the company went through, the employees always came first. In today’s throw-away society, employees have become the first to go. If the CEO’s paycheck is in jeopardy, or the stockholders value was going down, they let people go. It’s unusual to work for more than 5 years without going through some kind of layoff or ‘.

Because of this, and the all-around economic uncertainty of today’s world, a lot of people are getting involved in online career to help supplement their compensation or to find a way to get out of a dead-end job that they do not like doing. But where do you start? One of the best places to start is by becoming an affiliate marketer. Affiliate marketing is relatively quick and easy to start and requires very little, or no investment, in order to start making ready money online.

With an online career you can contact just about anybody with an Internet connection which means you have an extremely wide marketing area at your convenience. By being an affiliate marketer you do not have to create your own products or services in order to get started making hard cash online. The owners, or merchants as they are sometimes called, give you the rights to market their products for free in most cases.

Affiliate marketing has become one of the most popular methods for making ready money online today because the products or services have already been created for you. All that is needed is to promote, or advertise them in order to make sells and earn sales commissions which are pre-determined by the owner of the product or service that you will be marketing.

In a typical affiliate marketing set up the merchant provides his or her affiliates with the tools and resources required to sell his product or service. The affiliates use these resources, such as banners, graphics, or text advertising to post on their websites, or to put in blogs. They can also be sent out in emails to create sales of the product or service that they are promoting. The affiliate then gets a percentage of the total price of the product when a sale is made, which is usually 25% to 75% of the total price of the product.

Signing up as an affiliate marketer is easy. Just find a company that offers an affiliate program for their product or service and fill in their online form with your personal details. Most affiliate programs are free to join and most offer valuable instructions to help you get started in selling their products. The merchant stands to gain from your success so it is to their benefit to help you succeed with your affiliate marketing career.

You can also use an alternative method and join what is called an affiliate network. An affiliate network is a career that hosts a variety of affiliate programs for online merchants at one web site location. Most affiliate networks are free and easy to join and provide a full range of products for you to promote. Some of the most popular affiliate networks are: Commission Junction, Clickbank, Linkshare, Cash Engines, and VIP Profits. To find a whole list of popular affiliate networks just go and do a search on affiliate networks or go to the site listed here: http://www.webaffiliatesdirectory.com.

Affiliate marketing is one of the most rewarding careers that anyone could have. Someone can literally start on a shoestring budget and work into a consistent and very decent salary within a relatively short period of time. Many people make thousands of dollars each month just selling products from the Clickbank network. Clickbank is actually a great place to start as an affiliate marketer because they have thousands of products to choose from to market and a very good support system in place. It is also very easy to sign up and join Clickbank. Here is their link: http://www.clickbank.com

Becoming a successful affiliate will not be all that easy though because there is quite a lot of competition online. One of the best ways to become successful in affiliate marketing does require additional knowledge and effort and that you create a good content based website. You can have this created for you or you can do your own research and learn how to do it yourself. But, it is important to have a good content based web site that you can imbed links to the products you are marketing within the content on your site. The products you promote should be relevant to the content on your site which will take some initial planning and consideration.

Using this approach you would be able to seed, or insert, several products that you are promoting into the content of your site and then just advertise that one web site. You can start off with just one site and then build another site and do this over and over again over time. Before long you will have created a multitude of sites that promote many different products or services and that are linked to one another, which creates your own network of inter-related sales sites. This could turn out to be extremely profitable for you over a period of time.

If you plan you career properly you would probably want to promote products or services that offer two-tier affiliate marketing programs. With two-tier affiliate marketing programs you will not only get paid for your direct sales, but you will also be paid a percentage commission for the sales that your direct sales members make. This can be a very powerful and profitable plan for your company and it creates what is called "residual revenue."

Residual compensation is where each and every one of us should be aiming. Residual revenue is where you earn hard cash from ongoing sales regardless of how much you work. Granted, you’ll have to continue to bring in new customers as old ones will inevitably drop off, but most will stay.

One of the most important parts of your company plan should include residual net profit. These residual profits programs will allow you to earn multiple commissions each month from just one sale instead of having to sell the same products over and over again to new people. Some of the most successful Internet marketers recommend concentrating at least 75% of your time and efforts on residual income programs such as monthly subscription membership sites. These types of businesses bring you monthly income automatically with just one sale as long as the customer continues their active membership each month. When looking into affiliate programs, think about residual profits products or services. This is one of the most beneficial methods of earning affiliate commissions on an ongoing basis. It gets tedious selling individual products over and over again. However, a combination of both approaches should be implemented as many good products are a one-time sale. And the email lists you’ll get from those one-time sale can easily turn into residual total compensation if you market your subscription service to those people.

Well, the truth is that affiliate marketing is all about relationships. And what you are going to do is to build a strong relationship with people; this relates both to people that have already bought products you have promoted, and, even more important, people who are in touch with you but have never bought through you.

When you have a strong relation with your prospects, you are no more just an affiliate marketer: you become a product consultant. In fact in this case your relation will drive your interested towards them and you’ll have the sole purpose of proposing them just products that you know will benefit them.

An essential tip to make up a very good job as a marketer consultant is to buy the product by yourself and give it a complete test. This will pay back many times as you’ll be able to better sell the product that you are promoting.

For example you can write a review for the product.

You can share to your potential customers what a great experience you had with the product, and this can make them interested enough to buy the product.

You may also be able to provide a support if necessary or you may provide a confident tutorial or steps on how to use the product that you are trying to market based on your personal experience.

If you find out that the program you were promoting is not wortwhile or is a scam, stop immediately promoting it and inform your readers about it. This means that you have to be totally honest about the product that you are trying to market. This will help you boost your credibility with your audience.

Every product has its flaws and the one you are promoting isn’t different. If you think isn’t suited for part of your prospects, tell them. They’ll be absolutely grateful for your honesty and will trust you double when your next product will maybe suit them.

All this is even more important if the product has some major problems (or, as we said, is a scam): stop promoting it, admit your mistake and restart. We all make mistakes and admitting your mistake will boost your reader’s confidence in you. They’ll know they can trust on you, because if there will be some problems they know you’ll make them informed.

Lastly, don’t try to market everything you see. With services such as Clickbank, it is easy to become overwhelmed and try to market everything in the Clickbank marketplace. It’s better to focus on one market and market products that they would want.

So don’t promote all the products that are "easy" for you and don’t try to force your customers towards products they are not interested to. This would be a major mistake.

If you are going to become a serious marketer, you’ll understand that your customers are people; people have needs; needs have solutions; solutions are products; and that your primary duty is to give them the product that is a solution to their needs, not yours (money?).

Joint ventures are the best way to get your products sold quickly. For one person, you are very limited with time. There is only so much that can be achieved every day. So what are the options to greatly increase sales?

The answer is to get as many other marketers selling for you as possible. How can this be done? The best options are to find joint venture partners.

If you are relatively new to Internet marketing, then probably you will not own a big list of prospects to email with news of your products. So one very easy way is to use other marketer’s email lists.

So how is the best way to do this? Well you must find other Webmasters who have lists and are willing to participate in a joint venture. There are many webmasters who possess large lists of subscribers, and you must offer an interesting proposal to them.

If you are proposing to sell digitally downloadable products, then the costs involved are very small. Once a product is ready to be sold, you should offer 50% of the cost of the product to joint venture partners.

The best way to find joint venture partners, is to search for list owners and to do some research on search engines. Do a search for your chosen subject on Google for example, let’s say you are looking for webmasters who have sites about dogs.

If you have an ebook that you want to sell about training dogs, you can see the top searches that are returned on Google, see the sites and get an idea if they could be suitable joint venture partners.

If you think they are, then you must contact them and make an offer to them. Now the thing to remember is that if the Webmaster has a very successful site, he may have a big list of prospects, and it is important to offer a good quality product. The Webmaster will not want to promote a poorly written ebook to his subscribers.

It is very important to write a personal email to the Webmaster. You must look at the site, get the name of the owner, and when you make contact with them, explain that you visited their site, what you thought was good about it and why you are proposing a joint venture with them.

For example it could be that you have an ebook that offers new information to the type of products offered on the site. If the Webmaster does not answer your email, then contact another one. The idea is to get many Webmasters working with you.

Another good way to promote products is on Clickbank. It is possible to sign up for a Clickbank account for $50, after you are able to sell products there. The good point about Clickbank is that there are many affiliates there, who may be interested in working with you. Clickbank only work with digitally downloadable products and will handle the payments for affiliates.

There are other options available including a site where you can sell products free up to a certain price limit.

Once a product is ready to be sold, get others to do the work for you to see good results.

The recipe for affiliate marketing success is deceptively easily. Choose a program, drive traffic, and reap rewards. Each step in that overview, however, can get pretty complicated. Take, for instance, choosing a program. You might just look for a great commission structure and strong payment per sale. That strategy, however, will probably result in disappointment. Let’s look at some things you should consider when selecting an affiliate program in which to participate.

First, check the quality of the product. Even the best sales pitches eventually lose steam when the public realizes the product stink. Marketers will talk about selling the sizzle instead of the steak, but if the steak turns out to be burnt to a crisp, the restaurant won’t last long even with amazing marketing. Make sure you are backing a very good product.

Second, look at the support materials. Check out the final sales page. Is it compelling? Does it meet design expectations? Is the copy good? Remember, you just lead horses to the water–that sales page has to make them drink. If the producer isn’t offering a sales page, make sure they are giving you the tools you will need to have a good one built. Also, look for added items that can make your job easier. Brandable landing pages, free articles, and other tools can make selling easier and more profitable.

Third, evaluate the market and the size of the program. If you stumble across an affiliate program for an ebook on 1972 Topps Baseball cards, you will want to make very sure that there is a market segment who wants the information. You will also want to be certain that there aren’t hundreds of affiliates pushing the micro-niche product already. Even in situations where a wider appeal is obvious, you want to know there is a good market and that it isn’t overpopulated by other affiliates or products.

Fourth, assess the reputation of the program. Do your homework and make sure the program with which you will be aligning yourself is trustworthy and has a good track record in terms of making payments. It would be a shame to see your hard marketing efforts go down the tubes because of an affiliation with a less-that-scrupulous program!

You won’t make a dime if you are selling the wrong merchandise. Choosing the right program is absolutely critical to your success. Those who embrace programs without a great deal of thought or research generally post disappointing results and find themselves lamenting their hasty decisions. Spend the time required to pin down great programs!

Choosing the right program can be a challenge. There are many factors deserving of consideration. The four elements outlined here, in fact, are only part of the entire picture. However, by checking product quality, supporting materials, market numbers and program reputation you can improve your odds of affiliate marketing success.
