Watching successful affiliates, you’ll come to the conclusion that all of them have something important in common: they promote a portfolio of successful products. But how do you find the best affiliate marketing opportunity?

Clickbank

Clickbank is a marketplace for information and software products. The advantage of promoting these products is primarily the high commission you can earn: vendors of software packages or info products are usually offering a 50% cut - not too bad. Customers do have the advantage of instantaneous availability of the product, which favors the customer’s spontaneous buying impulse. The downside of Clickbank lies in the high number of inferior products with a high refund rate. Therefore, it’s sound advice to check twice before you start promoting a Clickbank product.

Commission Junction

Commission Junction also is a very popular provider of affiliate programs, mainly for physical products, but also for financial services. An interesting option for the affiliate are so-called "pay-per-lead" or "pay-per-action" programs: you get paid from these promotions as soon as the prospect fills out a form, i.e. a loan or credit card application or registers for a program on the vendor’s website.

Share A Sale

Share A Sale is similar to the Commission Junction program, but features many well-known brands. Affiliates who want to make money with their Playstation or iPod websites will find Share A Sale interesting. Share A Sale also offers pay-per-lead programs.

The selection of the right product and how to promote it is crucial to your success. Online or offline - the prospect has to trust your offer, therefore you should invest some time and build a solid portfolio of products you can promote.

If you want to learn more on how to find hot selling products as well as cutting-edge strategies on how to promote them, I recommend to have a closer look at Affiliate Project X.

Most of my working life has been spent working for a boss. I often dreamed about being my own boss but having a young family to support made it just too risky – that is, until the advent of the Affiliate Program.

The Affiliate Program is like a dream come true – an opportunity to be your own boss without the risk involved in setting up your own business with all the overheads. But what precisely is an Affiliate Program?

Well, briefly stated, it is about someone who owns a product and wishes to sell that product on the Internet. This individual is called the “merchant” or “product owner”. The merchant will create a web site to sell the product and will try to get people to visit his web site and buy his product. And here’s where you come in. You take his product and advertise it on the Internet and for every product bought, you receive a commission that is usually between 25% and 75%. The merchant is happy because he is making sales and profits he would not otherwise have made. You are happy because you are making money without having to create, stock, or deliver a product. It is a classic “win-win” situation. So …

· You don’t need your own web site

· You don’t need your own product

· You don’t need to carry any stock

· You don’t need to make deliveries

· You don’t have to handle any customer queries or complaints

All that is taken care of for you and all you have to worry about is advertising … and banking your commission cheques! Yes, it is as easy as 1,2 and 3.

1. Join an affiliate program (Clickbank.com)

2. Advertise the web site (Google Adwords)

3. Collect the commission cheques (Sent to you automatically by Clickbank)

And there are thousands of affiliate programs out there, selling just about everything you care to imagine. All of the worthwhile ones are free and easy to join and carry absolutely no obligation on you to sell anything.

It is not difficult to find affiliate programs. In fact, if something is being sold on the Internet, the chances are that is has an affiliate program. Just look on the web site for the magic words “Affiliates”, “Associates”, “Partners”, “Earn Commission”, “Make Money” or something similar.

Alternatively, key “affiliate programme” into Google and see how many results you get! Believe it or not, you can be up and running within thirty minutes – honest!

This has been a very brief overview of what Affiliate Programs are about but hopefully I have given you sufficient information to take that “leap” to become an Affiliate – good luck!

It is very easy to join an affiliate program. In recent years most of the major on line merchants have implemented some sort of affiliate program, which helps them to increase revenues in sales while saving much on advertising efforts. To become an affiliate all you need is a website and a desire to promote some one’s products or services and you will get paid a "finder’s fee" if your promotional efforts produce sales. Unfortunately these two things are not enough in order to become a successful affiliate.

When you join an affiliate program, you often referred to as a partner, and as a partner it is very important to build solid business relationship with your merchants. Before joining hundreds of affiliate programs and filling your website with countless affiliate links, you will be better off to join just a few and develop good relationships with managers of these programs. It is like having an insider in the company. Affiliate manager can provide you with some very helpful tips and information. You can ask what are the best converting keywords if you are using pay per click advertising as your promotional efforts. You can find out what are the best selling products or services, so you may feature them on your website.

If you have this kind of relationship with your advertiser this will eventually reflect on your websites content. You will be able to direct more qualified traffic to your advertiser and in turn will enjoy better return on your investment and hard work.

How important is it to market your affiliate programs? It is VERY important. It is the difference between success and failure. The more time you spend marketing your affiliate programs, the more successful you are. The more successful you are, the more money you will make.

Statistics indicate that 90% of affiliates make little or no money from their affiliate programs. They spend an average of 15% of their time on marketing. Do you want to be in the 90% group or do you want to be in the remaining 10% group?

Marketing affiliate programs is challenging and requires more than 15% of your time. Not only are you trying to get people to buy a product, you are competing with thousands of other affiliates trying to sell the same product!

Spend more time marketing your programs than the other affiliates and you’ll earn more money. If the other affiliates spend more time than you marketing their programs who do you think is going to succeed?

Just because you have to work hard marketing your programs does not mean you have to spend a fortune doing so. There are many effective, low cost and free marketing methods that work very well.

MARKETING TIPS:

Learn as much as you can about search engines and how they rank websites. Once you learn how that process works, spend as much time as possible trying to get a high ranking in the search engines for your site.

Write your own articles on subjects related to your website and post them on a separate page on your site. Once you have posted them on your site, submit them to the article resource sites.

Find out if any of your affiliate programs have articles on their website. If they do, find out if you can post those articles to your site. At the end of each of those articles, place your affiliate link that links back to the affiliate site.

Use Newsgroups to promote your sites by announcing new articles that you have written. Make sure you read the rules for each newsgroup before posting to it.

Subscribe to newsletters and ezines that are related to the theme of your website. They not only provide a great source of information, they also present another opportunity for advertising your affiliate programs. Make sure you read their advertising guidelines.

CHOOSING AFFILIATE PROGRAMS:

There are many thousands of affiliate programs on the net that you can join. How do you decide which programs to join? There are two options to choose from.

First, you can join as many programs as possible. This guarantees that at least a few of them will pay off, MAYBE.

The other option is to target your affiliate programs and choose a select few. By choosing only a small number, you will be able to concentrate all of your time and effort in marketing those and only those programs. This will drive more traffic your way.

Before you decide on which programs to join, spend some time researching the major affiliate programs. Once you are equipped with enough information, it will be easier to narrow down your options.

If you are having trouble reducing your field of possibilities, find an area that you are particularly interested in. If you have an interest in selling antique jewelry and you find there are only two affiliate programs that are devoted to this, join those two programs. You can then focus all of your marketing methods specifically to those two programs.

TIPS FOR BUILDING YOUR WEBSITE:

Are you thinking of starting your own website but not sure if you should? Read the following tips for building a site that will draw visitors and make sales.

The most important advice for building a good website is content, content, content. Your visitors want good quality content and they want a lot of it. Fill your site with articles (including other people’s articles as long as they fit your site’s theme), tips, and details of all the products and services on your site

Make sure you have a page that contains your contact information. Always list your name, your email address, and any other pertinent information. When visitors see that you are available to contact, they will be much more likely to trust you and click on your links!

Use a simple, no fuss style and layout with easy to find, well-marked links. (You must make it easy for your visitors to find your affiliate links!) Sites that are full of graphics and are complicated to maneuver around in do not work for affiliate sites. Keep it simple. Also, by keeping your graphics to a minimum, your site will load much quicker.

Affiliate marketing has become one of the most popular methods to make money on the internet. There is thousands of affiliate marketing companies to choose from, which gives you the ability to become an affiliate for a company based around your website. Another advantage to affiliate marketing is the ability to be an affiliate for a number of companies, not just one. So how do you go about selecting a successful affiliate marketing company?

It is wise to select an affiliate marketing company that has to do with your website. Odds are your website is something that interests you, so make sure you select a program that is of interest to you. This will make it much easier to promote and sell something if you have an interest in it.

After you know what type of affiliate marketing company you want to target and promote, you need to research A LOT about the various programs out there. Dig deep and find out what makes one program better than the others. To start you should look at the surface of the company. Ask yourself if it looks professional and if you would buy from them yourself. Does the company know the product and promote it strongly themselves? These are all signs of a successful company from the surface.

Everyone is in affiliate marketing to make money. So the next step is to find the programs that pay out the best and offer the most residual income. It is recommended that you look for a program that pays out no less than 40% of your sales. There are thousands of programs to choose from, so make sure your efforts are being rewarded with a high pay out.

Once you know how much you can make from a specific affiliate marketing company, look into whether or not the company provides you with tools and resources to promote the product. The only way you can be successful in affiliate marketing is if you sell the product, which makes it all the more crucial to have tools to promote the product.

Lastly, it is vital that the affiliate marketing company you select has a place to check your stats. Not only do you need to be able to check your stats, but you need to be able to check them 24 hours a day. After all, the internet never sleeps so why should the stat checking system sleep. If you don’t know how you’re doing, how are you going to be able to stay motivated?

Selecting the perfect affiliate marketing company for you can be difficult since there are so many choices. However, if you put in the effort to research and learn a little bit about some of the options, you should have no problem selecting a winner. Just remember, there is nothing saying you can’t be involved with multiple affiliate marketing programs at once.

Affiliate marketing is a joint and mutually beneficial business partnership between merchants and website publishers/owners (affiliates) whereby an affiliate is compensated for every visitor or client provided through his effort (website banner or text link). The moment a customer makes a purchase of goods or service, part of the profit generated from that particular transaction is credited to the affiliate’s account as a commission. Amounts of compensation may be based on a fixed value for each visit (pay-per-click), registration (pay-per-lead), or for every purchaser (pay-per-sale).

However, just like a coin, the affiliate marketing program also has its obverse and reverse side.

Advantages

• Merchants gain a wider place to sell their products and services, resulting to more customers and more sales.

• Merchants can gain more customers without spending valuable time in searching for them.

• Programs that track compile statistics from affiliate sites provide reliable and current client behavior on trends and demands at no extra cost.

• The affiliate marketing program provides an easy way to create additional sources of income for website publishers and owners. Marketing banners of merchants’ products generate instant sales wherein they get a commission.

• It does not require a sizeable investment on the part of the affiliate.

• The affiliate does not have to worry about customer support, book keeping, and e-commerce related headaches since in affiliate marketing, the merchant handles it all; all the affiliate needs to do is promote and resell the product.

• An affiliate marketer enjoys the luxury of being his own boss and work on his own time. He can work only for a few hours or more and generate income 24/7 wherever he may be located in the world.

• An affiliate marketer can still maintain his present work or business and have the affiliate marketing income supplement his financial position. With a laptop and wi-fi connection, anybody can work almost anywhere even while enjoying on vacation.

• For clients, they do not have to drive all the way to the merchant’s store or retailer to physically buy the product or engage the services of a service provider.

These are only some of the advantages of affiliate marketing. However, it is also best to be aware that this online business also has some disadvantages.

Disadvantages

• There is the possibility that some merchants may incur high commission costs and costly set up and maintenance fees due to affiliate facilitators/brokers.

• The affiliates may engage in false and misleading advertising in order to get sales commissions. Unscrupulous affiliates may make claims and promises regarding the product and services, which are completely wrong or extremely exaggerated. In cases like these, the merchant usually receives the complaints and lose any potential consumer.

• Unscrupulous and dishonest merchants may arbitrarily close down programs without informing the affiliates and without paying commissions.

• Merchants may promise high commissions to attract new affiliates then drop commission rates after a week or two.

• Link hijackers can hijack affiliate links and get paid for the commissions instead.

• There are also false advertising, unlawful use of trade names, logos, or brands.

No matter these disadvantages, affiliate marketing still remains as one of the best ways to make money online. Marketers simply have to understand that by doing their homework and research before hand and by implementing simple security measures, they can easily negate all these disadvantages in order to enjoy the advantages of the affiliate marketing program.

I’ve been doing affiliate marketing for about a year, and I won’t kid you and tell you it’s been an easy adventure. I think the one thing I can say is that I haven’t lost money, and if you’ve done any affiliate marketing, you probably know that when you first start out, this can be difficult to achieve. In some of my more frustrating moments I decided to buy some guides that I thought would help. One promoted splogging, one was a gambling scheme and another basically told me how to set up a Clickbank account and a Google Adwords account. I already knew how to do that, so it was junk. Actually, there are two that I would recommend wholeheartedly for a variety of reasons.

Recently, I fell into the hype of a new e-book called "Affiliate Project X". Maybe you’ve heard of it. No, this isn’t one of those stories where I tell you about my skepticism, bought the product anyways and was blown away. Actually, I was quite disappointed in "Affiliate Project X". Here’s why I was disappointed:

1. A lot of the information was contained in Adwords Miracle, which I found to be a decent e-book for the intermediate affiliate marketer as I was, and I wholeheartedly promote this book.

2. Some of the techniques promoted such as offering a bonus or refund are practices that violate the terms of service for Clickbank affiliates. I’ve actually been having some conversations with Clickbank about this over the last few days because I think it unfair for those who are trying to go about the affiliate marketing business honestly to have their businesses put at a stand still because of those wanting to side-step the terms of agreement and practice deceptive methods to get sales because they don’t want to put in the work.

3. The third reason I was disappointed was because besides the repetitive nature of the contents and the promotion of terms of violations, a method of link cloaking was promoted that did not work and the author had ample time to remove this section or even to alter it after being emailed about the fact that it doesn’t work a few times. This was a complete let down. I’m wondering how many affiliates using the methods have actually caught on to this or even have the ability to test whether it’s working.

All in all, after testing the methods and deciding I did not want to be that type of affiliate marketer, I have to say that I give Affiliate Project X a big zero. For those of you who made some money from it, good for you. However, I will sleep a lot better knowing that I’m an honest business person in the affiliate marketing business for the long haul using honest methods.

More and more merchants, big and small, are introducing their own versions of affiliate marketing programs in e-commerce community every day simply because it allows them to earn more!

One of the biggest appeals of affiliate marketing for merchants is the savings they gain since they no longer have to carry out their own online advertising and promotion. The savings incurred by merchants who have gained a well-established presence and success in the affiliate marketing program is such that some of them barely conduct any promotional activity to generate of more sales. Although this does not weaken their current sales in the online business, they fail to exploit the full potential of generating more revenues for their online business and their affiliates by taking advantage of after-sales marketing strategies.

Therefore, a merchant must still conduct some form of advertising regardless if he has an effective affiliate marketing program, and hundreds of affiliates conducting the promotions for him. The merchant must look into making a second or even a third sale to the customers he has acquired. Such practice is generally called after-sales/back-end marketing. Extending and modifying the practice of after-sales marketing to the Internet can complement affiliate marketing.

Here are some ways that a merchant or even an affiliate can perform after-sales marketing:

Newsletters – Whether through email or sent through snail mail, these publications are perfect avenues to introduce other products to past clients on your mailing list. These other products can be support or complimentary products of the original your sold or a totally different one. Therefore, in the merchant’s affiliate website, there should be a part where the customer is asked whether he would like to receive free newsletters from the online company. If the customer clicks yes, then this customer is taken to another web page where he can enter his email or mailing address. When the client agrees, make sure to inform him that his name will never be sold or provided to another party.

Thank You Letters – Send your client a thank you letter for patronizing the merchant’s products as a form of business courtesy. However, in the body of the letter, be sure to include other products that you promote in which the client may have an interest in the future.

Customer Satisfaction Emails – Aside from the original thank you letter, you can send a follow up email a month after the product purchase to inquire if the client is satisfied with the product he bought. Aside from the fact that the email positively shows the affiliate’s concern for the client, the opportunity also provides an avenue to mention other available products and services.

Customers Only Webpage – Integrating a webpage for clients only in your website where online support and discussions among other users of the products can be maintained is another marketing opportunity. The webpage can include links and banners for other related or complimentary products.

Exploiting after-sales marketing strategies and realizing its benefits are relatively easier since the client has already given his trust after the initial purchase.

Does that sound too good to be true? Welcome to the world of affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing holds interesting possibilities for entrepreneurs like you who want to try a new business option. Almost anyone who sells online has an affiliate marketing program to help expand their business. This article will give you a few tips on how to improve your chances of success as an affiliate.

What is affiliate marketing? In simple words it’s what you get paid (also called “referral fee”) for directing visitors to your website to other merchants’ sites. Compensation is based on the value of each visit, and could take the form of a pay per click or a commission for each sale.

This might shake you up, but according to a study by research firm Forrester, affiliate marketing earnings were worth over US$ 50 billion in 2005. We see we’ve got your attention. Read on to find out how you can get a share of those billions.

1. Test the waters: You must know a program and its underlying products inside out before signing up. Start by listing out the top selling items which will fetch profits quickly. Select programs that have a bighearted commission structure and products that cater well to your own website’s audience. Also make sure they have a solid track record of paying their affiliates on time. There are a zillion affiliate programs available on the web, so you can afford to be choosy. Take your time while selecting.

2. Rediscover the writer in you: C’mon, don’t worry about not having any writing skills. It’s simple! You can write free reports or short e-books related to the product you want to promote. This will set you apart from the others who promote the same products. The report should provide valuable information and a recommendation for the product. Your audience will trust you more.

3. Publish online: Your own newsletter can do the trick for you! This will help you build a subscriber base and develop a relationship with them. That might give you an opportunity to recommend products to them. Remember, it’s easier to recommend to a friend than selling to a stranger.

4. Collecting helps: Collect contact information of the visitors who download your report. Research proves that over 60% of sales of any product are made after the 5th exposure to the sales message. A regular, but not too aggressive follow up schedule might fetch good results. Try and offer real value at each contact – for example, an alert about the launch of a new book in the customer’s specific area of interest.

5. Design to impress: This is often a point of neglect. It’s very important that you design your website so that it makes a positive impression on visitors. People must be willing to believe what you say, before they can be enticed into visiting an affiliate website.

6. Stay away from banner ads: This is not the best strategy as visitors tend to avoid them. But if you must have them, use sparingly. Avoid placing the merchant’s banner on the same page as your report or any other reference to the product you wish to promote. Otherwise, it might make your article look like a well written advertisement, and negatively affect the visitor.

Remember that your role in any affiliate marketing program is only to pre-sell. Once you’ve done your job correctly, it’s the merchant’s job to close the deal.

Affiliate programs are all the craze now. Everybody wants one or wants to join one. That’s a good thing. There are plenty to join.

The nice thing about affiliate programs as marketing tools, however, is that you can start one, get people to join and there are no associated costs until your affiliates make a sale.

Here’s how it works:

You can join one of the many affiliate program managers out there or buy some special software to manage your affiliate program for you. They both have advantages and disadvantages.

An affiliate program management web site like Commission Junction has all the tools necessary to manage your program for you. It has the tracking tools necessary to measure click throughs and which of your affiliates is responsible for those click throughs. You have have a few options with regard to setting up your affiliate program rewards.

The downside to an affiliate program management web site is the cost involved. You have to pay these sites for their service and that can eat into your profits. The cost is usually a monthly fee and if you are not getting sales through your affiliates that is a cost.

With affiliate program management software you have a one-time fee. The cost can vary depending on several factors. You just have to evaluate the different software available to see which features you’ll need.

Another useful benefit to the affiliate program management software is it allows you to be a hands on manager rather than turn that aspect of your business over to a third party. Naturally, this can get time consuming so you have to decide whether that is a benefit or not. But the software can be a big help in managing your affiliate program.

An affiliate program can be set up for your business whether you sell a product or provide a service. Many service providers mistakenly believe that an affiliate program will not benefit them. Think again.

You can set up an affiliate program with a 10% commission for anyone who sends you a paying customer, or you can pay according to the lead. But you might as well get other people helping you sell your services.

If you set up an affiliate program to sell your products you should set the commission high enough that it will benefit your affiliates. Most affiliates do not want to sell a $99 product for a mere 10% commission. At least 30% is acceptable but many affiliate programs are based on a 50% commission. Some publishers have even given a 100% commission to their affiliates based on the list that their products will generate for future product sales.

Don’t rule out affiliate programs in your marketing strategy. They’re dependable, encourage other people to sell your products and services for you, and are a great way to expand your business.
